Basil
Basil is an herb, which basically means it’s used as a spice. It comes from a green plant that doesn’t look too terribly different than spinach. Basil is most popular in Italy and Asia, but still enjoys a fairly wide distribution throughout the world. The artist depicted Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray is named after this herb.
Taste
Basil tastes great. If anything, it adds a flavor to a dish that tells the eater that the preparer takes cooking a little more serious than most, and decided to throw in a little something special. Basil is a primary component in pesto.
Basil became an official snack on June 27th 2012.
